Eric R. Schuur, Ph.D.

Dr. Schuur has 20 years of experience as a research scientist, where his research focused on the molecular biology of gene expression in cancer and viruses. His contributions include a better understanding of gene structure and function, as well as improved understanding of transcription factor function in cancer and other diseases.

Dr. Schuur joined Calydon, Inc. as Director of Molecular Biology in 1994. He led a team that the identified and defined the function of the prostate specific antigen gene promoter and enhancer. His team went on to engineer adenovirus genomes to take advantage of the PSA knowledge to create prostate cancer therapeutics. These engineered adenoviruses entered clinical trials in 1997.

That same year Dr. Schuur joined Stanford as a Resident Scholar in the Department of Surgery, where his research focused on understanding how the estrogen receptor gene is inappropriately expressed in breast cancer. His work during this time contributed to definition of the structure of the human estrogen receptor alpha gene, as well as developing a novel test for alterations in allele copy number of individual of genes.

During this same period, Dr. Schuur developed a consulting practice to help small and medium size biotechnology companies. Dr. Schuur’s consulting focused on product development, technology assessment, and business development in the oncology, virology, genomics, proteomics, and regenerative medicine spaces.

In 2005, Dr. Schuur joined Asthmatx, Inc. as Associate Director of Clinical Affairs. While there he was responsible for managing clinical data analysis, clinical data management, clinical report writing, and publications. In this crossfunctional position and later as Associate Director of Scientific Affairs, Dr. Schuur was responsible for interfacing with multiple departments in order to advance development and regulatory approval of the Company’s asthma treatment device.

Dr. Schuur returned to consulting at the beginning of 2009 with the founding of VMWA. In this role he provides a range of medical/technical writing services. He received his Ph.D. degree in Experimental Pathology from the UCLA School of Medicine and completed a Post-doctoral Fellowship at the University of Southern California and the Scripps Research Institute.
